[Description and date of item], [Box/folder number], Goodman Manufacturing Company Photographs, A&M 4328, West Virginia and Regional History Center, West Virginia University Libraries, Morgantown, West Virginia.
The Goodman Manufacturing Company was based in Chicago, and was the leading fabricator of mine locomotive and other mining equipment for both coal and hard rock mining. Goodman was responsible for some of the most important innovations in the mining industry, and basic designs for Goodman locomotives, cutting machines, and drills paved the way for the mechanization of the mines. Most notably, Goodman introduced the first electrical mining locomotive for use in underground mines. The company also introduced personnel and materials carriers to move men and materials inside the mine, and the company manufactured the first electrical coal-cutting machine.
Photographs taken by or for the Goodman Manufacturing Company, a Chicago-based company that was the leading fabricator of mine locomotive and other mining equipment for both coal and hard rock mining. The content varies between images of mining machinery, office staff, manufacturing facilities, and underground mining scenes. The complete collection, currently at the Watts Museum at West Virginia University (in 2018), includes approximately 12,000 negatives (with a small percentage being glass, and the remaining divided between cellulose nitrate, cellulose acetate, and polyester) and 21,000 prints. This collection at the History Center consists of a select set of 371 digitized copies of these images.
