This collection consists of the business papers and bound volumes of H. J. Rhodes of Cartersville, Va. , 1816-1920, (ca. 500 items). The papers pertain mostly to a tobacco warehouse and a general merchandise store owned by Rhodes and W. R. England . The older records concern another general store. Included among the papers are accounts of tobacco sales (1892-1918), order forms for tobacco fertilizer, insurance policies, deeds and leases, tobacco invoices and accounts with the commission merchant firm of Frazer and Tompkins (1861-1920), as well as general business correspondence (1887-1920).
Also in the collection are 11 bound volumes concerning the same businesses. Included among the volumes are two ledgers, 1816-1818 and 1895-1919, covering general merchandise accounts; a journal, 1882-1884; six tobacco books concerning sales at the "Tobacco House" of Rhodes and England ; a bank book (1912-1920) and a journal of sumac sales (1882).
