Scope and Content

The Fontaine family papers consist of an undated commonplace book belonging to [ Ann Maury ] which contains religious essays, a paper about the origins of the Fontaine family compiled by William Maury , May 1830, and a bound manuscript entitled "A History of the Family of the Fontaines" by the Rev. James [Jacques] Fontaine . The Reverend Fontaine was a Huguenot minister who fled from France to England and finally settled in Ireland where he wrote this autobiography for his family in 1722.

This particular manuscript was copied and translated from the French by Fontaine's great-great granddaughter, Ann Maury, during 1825-1826, who also later published the manuscript as Memoirs of a Huguenot Family .

The manuscript was bequeathed to Henry Brooke Maury by his cousin, Virginia Walker Maury, daughter of Charles Walker Maury, the son of William Lewis Maury and a descendant of James Fontaine.
