Scope and Content

This collection consists of six volumes and ca. 50 loose items, all pertaining to business matters involving persons and institutions in Pittsylvania County, Virginia , 1834-1908.

The loose material includes primarily the records and accounts of the school commissioners for Pittsylvania County , 1835-1861. Among these papers are documents listing the tuition for "poor children" in various districts, including the child's name and age, parents names, number of days attended school, cost per day, total cost for the year and textbooks needed. There are also annual accounts listing teachers by name and salary and "School Operations" reports which list the teachers and number of students in each district.

Other loose papers consist of the accounts, correspondence and bills of J. M. Whittle & Co. ; Harvey, Blair & Co. , general wholesale grocers, and W. A. Anderson , attorney.

The bound volumes include a general merchandise daybook, 1891-1892; accounts, 1852-1864, of a lawyer in Pittsylvania County ; daybooks, 1892 and 1908, of a fertilizer dealer, and an invoice, 1908, of general store merchandise, possibly of a Jacob Gravely and Company .
