This item was given to the Library by James P. Borden, Rochester, New York, on May 27, 1993.
Funded in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities
This addition to the papers of Levi Pitman (1807-1892), a clock maker and itinerant merchant of Tom's Brook, Shenandoah County, Virginia , consists of a patent document (No. 9888) on parchment, July 26, 1853, four leaves including one with an illustration, 19" x 14 1/2," for the invention of an improved plotting theodolite used in surveying. With the aid of this invention, the surveyor is enabled to draw each line of his diagram and note the course immediately after he sights it in. Pitman refers to his work on the plotting theodolite in volume six of his diaries, October 14, 1852-December 23, 1855 (see accession # 6707-b, Box 1). The document has been professionally repaired and housed.
