William Faulkner Collection, 1924, Accession #6074-j, Special Collections, University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, Va.
A gift to the Library from John Lancaster of the Amherst College Library on June 28, 1984.
Webster, as U.S. Post Office inspector, writes to Faulkner, a postmaster at University, Miss., charging him with neglect of duties and notifying him of his imminent dismissal. The charges include being "a habitual reader of books and magazines" and writing his own book while at work, failure to forward mail, careless handling of mail, irregular hours, indifference to patrons and card playing in the office.
The letter was identified as hoax by University of Virginia Library staff member Joan St. C. Crane in her article "Case No 133733-c " in the Mississippi Quarterly.
