These photographs were purchased by the University of
Virginia Library on January 12, 1998, from L & T
Respess, Charlottesville, Virginia.
This collection consists of twenty-one photographs removed
from a scrapbook recording the construction of the final leg
of the Carolina, Clinchfield & Ohio Railroad in 1913 and
taken by the 2nd United States Engineer's Office, Cincinnati,
Ohio. The work was being done near "The Breaks" on the Big
Sandy River at the Virginia-Kentucky border in Dickenson
County, and the photographs show river scenes, tunnels at
Pool's Point, Hill's Mill, and Skagg's Hole, rail beds,
construction workers, and Elkhorn City, Kentucky. Also present
are four other photographs: two of Natural Tunnel, Scott
County, Virginia, an unidentified tunnel near Pennington Gap,
Lee County, Virginia, and one of an unidentified road running
