Harkaway Estate Papers, 1920-1924, Accession #11345, Special Collections Department, University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, Va.
This collection was given to the University of Virginia Library on December 1, 1997, by Mrs. Robert Standish, Keswick, Virginia.
The papers of the Harkaway Estate, Albemarle County, Virginia, ca. 1900-1950, ca. 210 items, consists of photographs of sporting events, such as cockfighting, horse racing, horse jumping, and dogs, photographs of people in the John Stewart and related families, and World War II scenes and men in the armed services.
The photographs of World War scenes were taken by NBC during a tour of war damage in England, and during a Radio Heads Tour of the [Italian Front], which included Lt. General M.W. Clark, Air Vice Marshal MacNeece Foster, Niles Trammell (NBC President), and John Royal (NBC Vice-President). Other items include printed materials and correspondence, primarily concerning John Stewart and his family and acquaintances.
The correspondence is chiefly to Mr. John & Mrs. Eleanor H. Stewart, and correspondents and topics include: the Keswick Hunt Club (George H. Whitten; 1933 Jul 6); affairs of the Masters of Foxhounds Association of America (Henry G. Vaughan; 1933 Dec 14; 1936 Nov 6; 1937 Jan 16 & 21; Feb 11; Mar 20; Apr 1; and 1938 Jan 3); the pedigree of the puppy of Eva and Deacon belonging to Dick Baker (1934 Jul 18); Edward H. Carle (1934 Dec 5); William du Pont, Jr. (1937 Jan 21); and J.C. Murtagh (n.y. Sep 10).
