This diary was purchased by the University of Virginia Library from Charles Apfelbaum on May 28, 1997.
This collection consists of 185 page manuscript diary kept by Charles Ashby Jones, nephew of Confederate General Turner Ashby, during his service in the Spanish-American War, April 26, 1898, to November 3, 1898. Charles Ashby Jones was originally enlisted in Company D, 12th New York Infantry Regiment, National Guard on February 1897, but transferred to Company F, 8th New York Volunteer Regiment (see pages 16-21) while still training in Peekskill, New York.
Jones describes the formation of his regiment and company (pages 1-3); lists officers and non-commissioned officers (pages 10-11, 34); his training in Peekskill, New York, where he was rejected for service by one doctor and transferred to another company (pages 16-21); the trip to Tennessee (pages 43-54); his long training experiences at Chickamauga Park, near Chattanooga, Tennessee, including details of camp life, drills, food, guard duty, and maneuvers (pages 55-177); and being mustered out at the Armory in New York City (pages 178-185).
The volume also includes a note on an index card about schoolmate, Tom Clemmings, who served in the 22nd New York Voluntary Infantry, and a few clippings about the Spanish-American War pasted in the front of the diary.
