This collection was purchased by the University of Virginia Library from Jerry N. Showalter on September 22, 1997.
This collection consists of ca. 100 items, ca. 1818-1957, the papers of the Howard family of Rockingham County and Augusta County, Virginia, including correspondence, and financial and legal documents, such as accounts, receipts, promissory notes, a deed, and bonds. The dated correspondence is all post Civil War and continues until 1918.
Topics in the correspondence include: the Presidential race between U.S. Grant and Horatio Seymour (1868 Oct 11); local murder trial (1877 July 12); marriage of Peter Whitesel and Miss Jordan of Augusta (1878 Jan 4); reference to the assassination of President James A. Garfield (1881 Jul 7); neighbor's impressions of life in Indiana, many letters allude to Indiana briefly (1882 Oct 5); invitation to join the mass immigration to Kansas (1884 Jan 21); and a large destructive storm which killed seven people and injured eighteen (1884 Apr 15).
