These two account books were purchased by the Library from Carmen D. Valentino, Rare Books & Manuscripts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on December 12, 1995.
According to the The Ivey Family in the United States [CS71. I8 1941] by George Franks Ivey, Archer Watkins Coleman married Otelia Jane Ivey, daughter of Sallie (Dance) and Peter Ivey. They had issue: Carrie, married Albert C. Diggs; Lottie, married William S. Harried; Mary M., married Dr. Frank Simmons; Bessie, married Guy H. Brown; Howard, married Sissie Davis; and, Leone, unmarried.
There are two account books, 1859-1865, of Coleman Hearst & Company of Richmond, Virginia, and A[rcher] W[atkins] Coleman & Company of Amelia County, Virginia. One bound volume contains: journal, November 1859 - January 1862, of Coleman Hearst & Company, concerning the purchase of bales of cotton and of rope, and the services of ginning, bagging, and hauling; cash book, 1863, of A[rcher] W[atkins] Coleman & Company; and, a list of notes (accounts receivable) of A[rcher] W[atkins] Coleman & Company and C[oleman] & Brother. Names included in the cotton accounts are: Luckie, Mayo, Aron, Boggan, Jones, Langford, Calley, Palmore, Matthews, Bibb, Small, Stewart, Pulman, Barlow, and Lee. Names included in the list of notes are: Albritton, Arnold, Beverly, Coleman, Davis, Dennis, Etheridge, Fountain, Glenn, Hall, Hunter, Ingram, Jones, Kervan, Ladd, Lide, Lucas, Matthews, McCullough, McKeller, Miller, Norris, Peak, Powell, Powry, Raham, Robison, Sheppard, Soles, Stewart, Vernon, Walton, Womack, and Wood. The other volume contains an extensive 47-page store inventory listing medicines, stationery, glass, china, crockery, notions, hats, trimmings, clothing, dry goods, hardware, household goods, cutlery, brushes, books, store fixtures, and numerous other goods.
