Fowlkes Family Papers, 1854, 1980, Accession #11235, Special Collections Dept., University of Virginia Library, charlottesville, Va.
This material was given to the Library by Richard B. Taylor of Rancho Palomino, Las Vegas, Nevada, on April 5, 1996.
There are three items, 1854 and 1980, pertaining to the Fowlkes family chiefly of southwestern Virginia. There is a letter, December 10, 1854, from Henry Meriwether Fowlkes of Greenhead, Montgomery County, Virginia to his infant son Henry Augustine Fowlkes, born November 20, 1853, to be read upon reaching manhood. The letter is a document of spiritual, religious, educational and practical advice from a father to his son. There is also a transcription, March 3, 1980, of this letter along with comments on the value of the contents of the letter by Richard B. Taylor, descendant of Henry Meriwether Fowlkes. There is also a page of genealogical data about this generation of the Fowlkes family: Henry Meriwether Fowlkes (1830-1887) and Jane Augustine (Clark) Fowlkes (1830-1863) and their offspring--Henry Augustine, Emily Susan, Lizzie Clark, Octavia, Mary Thomas, and Jane Eucibius.
