The journal was purchased by the University of Virginia Library from Heartwood Books, Charlottesville, Virginia, on February 2, 1997.
This collection consists of a fragment of a manuscript journal, 1793-1796, pages 25-49, chiefly concerning business transactions in Amherst County involving sales of land, slaves, and other property. Opposing pages of the journal are numbered with the same number and contain columns for the following types of information, "kind of conveyance," "dates," "when acknowledged or proved," "parties, names & residence," "quantities & situations of land, numbers of slaves & description of personal estate conveyed." Names of slaves sold are listed on pages 27, 34, 35, 36, 40, 41, and 45 of the journal.
