Acquisition Information

This letter was formerly laid in The Light of Asia (PR4012 .L3 1879b) before it was transferred to the Manuscripts Division from Rare Books on November 30, 1993. The letter was originally given to the Library by Clifton Waller Barrett but was not part of the Barrett Collection of American Literature.

Scope and Content Information

In this three page autograph letter, November 14, 1880, from Sir Edwin S. Arnold (1832-1904), London, to "My dear Sir" [probably his American editor at Roberts Brothers], Arnold discusses his careful checking of the proofs of his translation of [ The Light of Asia ?] for the American edition which he returns by tomorrow's mail noting the change of the date of publication. He assures his editor that he shares his "feelings about the nobleness of sentiment in this ancient Hindu epic, and your admiration will, I hope, be enhanced by the gentleness & self sacrifice of the next and last Parva which I have just begun to translate, & which I will send in as soon as I can."

Arnold also reminds his editor of the limitations on his time as he is the editor of a London journal which is published daily in 250,000 copies [The Daily Telegraph], asks that as regards payment he be treated as an ordinary contributor, and says that his best reward would be to adequately show his appreciation at the honor conveyed upon him by the favorable review of The Light of Asia by Oliver Wendell Holmes.
