Catherine Esther Beecher Letter, 1864, in the Clifton Waller Barret Library, Accession #11133, Special Collections Dept., University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, Va.
Catherine Esther Beecher was an American educator and reformer.
In this 1864 June 6 letter from Catherine Esther Beecher, Columbus, Ohio, to Bishop [Thomas March ?] Clark, [Rhode Island ?], Beecher explains her motivation for including extracts of comments concerning her book Religious Training of Children from influential clergy of the Episcopal Church in an appendix and discusses her reason for joining the Episcopal Church: "I have entered the Episcopal church, not as a controversialist, but as an educator, seeking for a measure of liberty I can find no where else; & for a church in which the lambs of Christ's fold are not excluded. I have given my views & the reasons for them & henceforth expect to confine myself to the practical duties & writings of an educator".
