George Washington Ball Papers, 1895, Accession #11150, Special Collections Dept., University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, Va.
These items were purchased by the University of Virginia Library from Timothy H. Bakken, Clarendon Hills, Illinois, on August 9, 1994.
This collection consists of an engraved calling card for "G. Washington Ball" and a two page letter, August 6, 1895, from G. Washington Ball, Washington City, to Mr. D.N. Morgan, discussing genealogical and historical subjects, especially the Revolutionary service of Colonel Burges Ball. He also invites Morgan to visit his neighbor, President John Tyler's son, [John Tyler, Jr. (1819-1896) ?], the last survivor of the explosion on the U.S.S. Princeton, who wishes to sell the manuscript of his eyewitness account of the disaster to a historical society. Tyler's daughter also possesses a number of Colonial miniatures of members of the Tyler family and other historical relics which he will want to see.
