This letter was purchased by the University of Virginia Library from Jerry N. Showalter, Bookseller, Ivy, Virginia, on April 26, 1995.

Scope and Content Information

This collection consists of a three-page letter, May 6, 1849, from Thomas H. Wynne, Richmond, Virginia, to William H. Stith, Pleasant View, Darlington District, South Carolina, describing the inauguration of President Zachary Taylor. Wynne attended the processional, the inauguration and the Great Ball where he was introduced to General Taylor: "The impression made on my mind of General Taylor is far from pleasing. He is evidently out of place & none will find in his person or face traits of an individual suitable to represent the executive of this nation." Wynne also mentions the defeat of [John Minor?] Botts in the spring elections owing to the division of the Whigs, a railroad bill, the illness of a friend of Stith's, and the exhibition of Siamese twins prior to an operation to attempt to separate them.
