Scope and Content Information

There are three small pen and ink drawings of the cartoon character "Abe Martin" created by Kin Hubbard (d. 1930), showing Abe Martin dressed for fishing while his wife is plowing, eating while his wife is shooing away flies with a straw broom, and looking at a tree with the words, "Lottie [heart with arrow through it] Amos June 1877" cut on the trunk.

Also present is a typed letter, June 6, [1952], from Fred C. Kelly, Kensington, Maryland, to George Matthew Adams, New York, thanking him for the "magnifique" Today's Talk article Adams wrote concerning The Life and Times of Kin Hubbard by Kelly. According to this review, the "Abe Martin" cartoon started its career in a small spot at the top of the back page of the Indianapolis News with just the character and two lines of humorous comment. Eventually the cartoon was carried by almost two hundred newspapers through syndication.
