Michael Millgate, born July 19, 1929 in Southampton, England, was educated at St. Catharine's College, Cambridge, B.A., 1952, M.A., 1956; University of Michigan, 1956-1957; and, University of Leeds, Ph.D., 1960. He married Eunice Jane Barr, a university teacher, on February 27, 1960. He was a lecturer in English literature, 1958-1964, at the University of Leeds; professor of English and chairman of the department, 1964-1967, at York University, Ontario; and, professor of English, 1967- , at the University of Toronto. Awards and honors include the Killam Research Scholarship and Fellow of Royal Society. He is the author of William Faulkner , American Social Fiction: James to Cozzens , and The Achievement of William Faulkner ; and, editor and author of selected works of Alfred Tennyson, Theodore Dreiser, William Faulkner, and Thomas Hardy. A scholar of English and American literature, he is noted for his extensively researched writing and editing on the life of William Faulkner and Thomas Hardy.
