World War I Sketches by Eugène Dété, 1914-1918, Accession #11199, Special Collections Dept., University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, Va.
The wood engravings are identified as being a gift from Charles Locke.
These sketches were transferred to the Manuscripts Division of the Special Collections Department by the Rare Book Division on June 30, 1995.
Eugène Dété, a wood engraver, was born in Valenciennes, France, on November 7, 1848, and died in 1922. He was a student of Smeeton and Tilly, made his debut at the 1879 Salon, and was a member of the Artistes Francais from 1884. He received an honorable mention in 1884, a third place medal in 1899, a bronze medal at the 1900 World's Fair, and a second place medal in 1903.
The scenes depict trench warfare and an ambulance being loaded.
