Caleb Jones Letter to John Arnold Rockwell, 1852, Accession #11094, Special Collections Dept., University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, Va.
The letter was purchased by the Library from Timothy H. Bakken, Halvor Americana, Clarendon Hills, Illinois, on April 27, 1993.
After serving in the House of Representatives from 1845-1849, John Arnold Rockwell (1803-1861) practiced law before the United States Court of Claims, Washington, D.C., until his death in 1861.
This autograph letter, July 21, 1852, from Caleb Jones, Richmond, to former Connecticut congressman John Arnold Rockwell (1803-1861), Washington, D.C., denying Rockwell's claim for payment for services rendered in the passage of the "Act for the relief of the Virginia Woollen Company." Jones points out that Rockwell was paid in advance for his work in drawing up the bill and he was not aware of any further lobbying action by Rockwell in the House or Senate.
