This letter was purchased on April 27, 1993, by the Library, from Timothy H. Bakken, Halvor Americana, Clarendon Hills, Illinois.

Scope and Content Information

This three-page autograph letter from Vaughan & Young, [Petersburg, Virginia], February 23, 1855, including a receipt for the sale of one hogshead of tobacco at Oaks Warehouse to a Mr. Osborne for $143.00, to Evans Tanner of Tanners Store, Mecklenburg County, discussing the condition of the tobacco market and congratulating Tanner on receiving the highest price for tobacco in their market to date. They also mention the effects of the bad weather on the market, the scarcity of money, and the reluctance of banks to accommodate the market by discounts, all of which prevents competition and hinders the activities of the smaller tobacco traders. Vaughan & Young advise Tanner to send his crop in immediately as they did not expect prices to go much higher in the spring.
