The photograph was purchased by the Library from Krainik Gallery, Falls Church, Virginia, on February 2, 1993.

Scope and Content Information

This wet-plate albumen sepia photograph of the post office building at Surry Court House, Virginia, taken during Reconstruction, ca. 1865-1870, shows a group of men including two Union cavalrymen and a black man posed in front of the building. The building also has a sign displayed reading, "J.T. Duncan General Commission Merchants," and a bulletin board on the end of the steps to the right of the photograph which reads "Corbell and Cocke Weekly Bulletin The Celebrated Virginia Hog Cholera Cure For Sale Here." Dr. Corbell, standing with his leather bag near the steps in the foreground, and his partner, Peyton A. Cocke, are identified in the photograph.
