These volumes were purchased by the Library from Bookworm & Silverfish, Wytheville, Virginia, on February 2, 1993.

Scope and Content Information

This collection consists of two bound farm ledgers, ca. 1896-1919 & 1957, and 1916-1958, with miscellaneous loose material in the volumes, belonging to John R. Clore, farmer and insurance agent, Criglersville, Madison County, Virginia. Clore was an agent with the Farm Bureau Insurance Company and sold "all lines of insurance." He also served as president of the Madison County Lions Club in 1944. The volumes record the many different types of agricultural entries associated with a general farming operation, such as the hiring of farm laborers, various expenses and purchases, including produce records, grain sales, livestock records, payments for road work, bush cutting, a record of brood animals, bushels of apples packed, hauling fees, hay baling costs, fence mending work, harvesting records, tobacco crops, threshing records, and mention of lard, bacon, and egg sales.
