Biographical/Historical Information

MekWatkins graduated from Colgate University and later became a New York Times Book Review editor. He was the co-editor of To Be A Black Woman: Portraits in Fact and Fiction (1970) and in 1980 received the Alicia Paterson Fellowship to study African-American humor.

Scope and Content Information

This item is the ca. January 27, 1971 bound advance proofs of The Black Review , No. 1, edited by Mel Watkins, William Morrow and Company, New York. This anthology, one of many examples of the renaissance and interest in black history and literature during the late 1960s, contains essays, plays, poetry, and short stories by contemporary African-American writers such as Barry E. Beckham (b. 1944), Cecil M. Brown (b. 1943), Ed Bullins (b. 1935), George Davis (b. 1939), Nikki Giovanni (b. 1943), David Henderson (b. 1942), George E. Kent (1920-1982), Julius Lester (b. 1939), Reginald Major, and Shane Stevens (a white writer). It was published as part of the Morrow Paperback Editions.
