These letters were given to the Library by Martha Leeb Hadzi of Northampton, Massachusetts, on August 23, 1991.

Scope and Content Information

This collection consists of seven letters, 1889-1903, from Mary Evans, a former slave, and her son, Henry Evans of Knoxville, Maryland, to her former owner, Brian Philpot of Chicago, Illinois. The letters mention news of the Evans family and others of the Knoxville, Maryland community, including Brian Reid, Mr. Blanchard, Simon [Evans], Joshua [Evans] (a preacher), a married daughter Caroline, and a son at home, Henry. Mary Evans believed herself to be ten months older than Brian Philpot and several of her letters relate to her attempts to verify her age. Mary and Henry Evans also wrote several letters thanking Philpot for his gifts of clothing and money to the family.
