This collection was made a gift to the Library by Joan St. C. Crane of the Rare Books Division, Special Collections Department, University of Virginia Library, on October 22, 1990.

Biographical/Historical Information

Henry J. Crane (1835- )of Lucas County, Ohio, was mustered into military service on October 12, 1861, as a private of Company B, 67th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. On December 18, 1861, he was appointed 2nd Lieutenant; and, on March 22, 1862, he was appointed Captain for gallantry on the field. He received an Honorable Discharge on January 10, 1865. Further information on Crane may be found in this collection in the form of a typed biography and a "Portfolio of Personal Military and Civil History," 1903, certified by the Soldiers and Sailors Historical and Benevolent Society of Washington, D. C. Other documents, 1864- 1865, include invoices of ordnance and ordnance stores, an abstract of expenditures, and a list of stores abandoned before Richmond, Virginia and the circumstances under which this occurred.

Scope and Content Information

The Papers of Crane include an invoice and a quarterly return of ordnance and ordnance stores, an abstract of expentiures, and a list and explanation of stores lost in action before Richmond, October 1864. With these is a "Portfolio of personal military and civil history," 1903, and a typed biography, n.d.
