The letter was purchased by the Library from The Autograph Alcove of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin on July 11, 1989.

Scope and Content Information

In this letter to Mr. Clarence Julian Owens (1877-1941), Managing Director of the Southern Commercial Congress, November 17, 1914, Governor Henry Carter Stuart (1855-1933) agreed to attend the conference called by Senator Duncan U. Fletcher. Fletcher, President of the Southern Commercial Congress, wished to discuss questions concerning the immigration of certain classes and communities to work on Southern farms and how best to absorb the great influx of immigrants expected to come to the United States at the conclusion of World War I.
