James Monroe, Letter to Robley Dunglison, 1829 September 5, Accession # 10827, Special Collections Dept., University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, Va.
This letter was purchased by the Library from The Book Press Ltd. of Williamsburg, Virginia, on April 12, 1989.
James Monroe, a member of the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia, wrote this letter of recommendation for William B. Cochran who planned to study medicine at the University of Virginia, September 5, 1829, to an unnamed recipient, probably [Robley Dunglison], Chairman of the Faculty and Professor of Physiology, Medicine, and Obstetrics. Monroe also asked that his brother, John H. Cochran, be presented to [Gessner] Harrison, Professor of Ancient Languages.
Monroe also made these remarks concerning the University of Virginia, "It affords me great pleasure, to find, that our university gains credit throughout our state, as I trust and believe it has, throughout the union."
