The poem was given to the University of Virginia Library by Paul Collinge, Heartwood Books, Charlottesville, Virginia, through Matthew J. Bruccoli, on November 8, 1995.
This addition to the Joseph M. Bruccoli Great War Collection consists of a undated typescript of a poem entitled "If Poetry is the Essence of Thought" by an unknown author, relating in graphic and vulgar language the emotions and thoughts of a World War I soldier.
