The letter and diary were given to the Library on December 2, 1987, by Mrs. Charles Carnan of Charlottesville, Virginia, and bear no restrictions.
This collection of Mrs. Charles Carnan consists of two items, a letter of William Jennings Bryan, April 28, 1897, to Mrs. George S. Bruce concerning the possible genealogical connections between the Waters and the Jennings families and a bound notebook containing the first volume of an apparently three volume diary, June 19-July 24, 1895.
The diary was kept by Nina Withers Halsey of Lexington, Kentucky, while on a grand tour of Europe, conducted by Dr. Robert S. Barrett. The volume is illustrated with clippings and memorabilia, and each part of the trip is described under clearly marked headings, beginning with her trip to New York where she joined Barrett's tour group.
