This collection was given to the Library on August 26, 1985, by Mr. William Duke of Richmond, Virginia and Mrs. Gerald C. Kinne of Setauket, New York.

Scope and Content Information

This collection consists of two items, ca. 1864-1865, the five-page manuscript and a typed transcript prepared from it, reminiscences of R. T. W. Duke, who was the Confederate commanding officer of the 2nd Battalion, Virginia Reserves, during the Civil War. Duke describes the formation of the Reserves for Albemarle County from boys between sixteen and eighteen and older men from forty-five to sixty; the duty stations of the battlion of Belle Isle guarding prisoners; Bottom's Bridge on the Chickahominy, Fort Harrison and Fort Gilmer, Libby Prison at Richmond; and the evacuation of Richmond and its surrender to Federal forces.
