William Eppes Family Papers, 1791, 1979, Accession #10582-f, Special Collections Dept., University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, Va.
These items were made a gift to the Library by William David Eppes of New York, New York, on February 17, 1997.
There are two items, 1791 and 1979, pertaining to the Eppes family of Virginia. There is a letter, April 5, 1791, from Francis Eppes, Eppington, Virginia, to his father-in-law, Thomas Jefferson, [Philadelphia, Pennsylvania], chiefly concerning the education of his son, Jack. Eppes comments that he and his son have thought of law as the profession Jack should study but writes that if Jefferson "should find his foundations too slender to be respectable in that line I wish you to divert his studies to anything else which you think most to his advantage...". Eppes discusses study, work, financial, and lodging arrangements for Jack. He also mentions a fortunate sale and advises Jefferson not to sell until after Christmas as Col. Skipwith "intends to dispose of one hundred on the first of October." There is also a copy of a typed manuscript, 1979, entitled "A Tribute to Eva Lee Turner Clark, Francis Epes Descendant From Her Son" by Edward Hardy Clark, written at the request of William David Eppes. Family members and others mentioned in this manuscript are Eva Lee Turner ( -1947), Francis Epes Clark ( -1945), Harriet Tarleton Gill, William Gill, and Phoebe Apperson.
