Scope and Content

This collection consists of eight vellum leaves from a mid-thirteenth century Bible from France , including portions of the Gospels of Mark, Luke and John, in Latin. The leaves are described by the dealer as "from a very well and professionally written Bible. Leaves measure 303 by 211 mm, written space 193 by 130 mm. Ruled. The text is in two columns, 41 lines; page headings are supplied in red and blue caps, chapter numbers are in red and blue, opening initials are in red and blue with delicate calligraphic penwork extensions filling the entire margin or intercolumnar space. In a number of cases, scribal omissions are carefully indicated and interpolated."

The leaves are neatly numbered in pencil by a recent hand and the passages are from Mark 9:36-11:7; Luke 1:25-4:19; and John 3:1-7:37 and 9:5-12:29.
