Julius J. Lankes, Illustrations for The Goodhues of Sinking Creek , Accession # 10164-j, Special Collections Dept., University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, Va.
This collection was made a gift to the Library on May 5, 1987 by J.B. Lankes of Hampton, Virginia and Mrs. Madeleine de Barthe Schuermann of Temple Hill, Maryland.
The thirty-five items, 1933-1934, contained in this collection pertain to J.J. Lankes' illustration of W.R. Burnett's short story The Goodhues of Sinking Creek in its book form. Included are ten woodblocks, ten documentary prints, five two-color prints, and nine letters (electrostatic copies) from Arthur W. Rushmore of Harper & Brothers Publishers. According to J.B. Lankes, each illustration was made by using two blocks, one a tint block. The documentary prints of the tint blocks were made with black ink on vellum; and, the two-color prints, using green and black ink, were made with two blocks.
