Letter to Eudora Welty, October 17, 1989, Accession #10117-g , Special Collections Dept., University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, Va.
Transferred from Rare Book Division June 11, 1996.
This is an electrostatic copy of a letter, October 17, 1989, from James B. Meriwether, Columbia, South Carolina, to Eudora Welty, requesting her signature in a book, The Robber Bridegroom, that was owned by William Faulkner and that contains his signature. Meriwether writes that over the years he has "resisted the temptation to ask you to sign or inscribe for me any of your books..." but that he is now going to break down and "ask you to add your signature to one that is already in it..." This letter also serves as an introduction to his daughter, Becky.
