Letter of Recommendation from Joseph Ruggles Wilson, 1857, Accession #9725-a , Special Collections Dept., University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, Va.
This letter was purchased from Jerry Showalter, Bookseller, Ivy, Virginia, by the University of Virginia Library on April 22, 1997.
This collection consists of a two page autograph letter of recommendation for a teaching position for a former pupil, Charles S. Winston, June 16, 1857, from Presbyterian minister and pastor of a church in Staunton, Joseph Ruggles Wilson (1822-1903), the father of Woodrow Wilson. Wilson identifies himself as "formerly Professor of Chemistry & Natural Philosophy in Hampden Sidney College." He was also instrumental in organizing the Presbyterian church of the Confederate States of America and supported the South during the Civil War.
