John B. Christian Ledgers, Accession #38-19, Special Collections Dept., University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, Va.
This collection was given to the Library on April 19, 1932.
Three ledgers or journals kept by John B. Christian of Greenville, Augusta County, Virginia. The earliest (1815-1818) contains what appear to be a grocer's accounts, as well as copies of letters and miscellaneous memoranda. The second (1823-1828) is a merchant's account book, fragmentary, reflecting a business in Augusta and Rockbridge counties, and was probably kept by members of the Christian family. The third (1827-1828) is a volume of minutes of the Greenville Polemic Society meetings, for which John B. Christian was secretary and later president. The ledger also contains a register, added in 1878, giving John D. Imboden's C.S.A. command, plus lists of Staunton, Va., lawyers, merchants and physicians.
