Records of the Charlottesville Fair Housing Committee, 1964-1968, Accession #10355 , Special Collections Dept., University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, Va.
The collection was given to the Library by Mrs. Herbert Jehle of Charlottesville, Virginia, through Mr. Charles E. Moran, Jr. on October 24, 1979.
This collection consists of ca. 200 items, 1964-1968, records of the Charlottesville Fair Housing Committee. This organization was formed in May 1965 "to support and encourage freedom of residence in our community so that all persons, regardless of race, religion or national origin, can obtain the housing they desire and can afford." The collection includes the committee's statement of purpose, bylaws, minutes, newsletters, reports, correspondence, notes, and lists.
In addition to information concerning housing for blacks in Charlottesville, the collection contains items relating to other aspects of race relations and to church social programs. Also included are communications from similar organizations in other areas such as Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania.
