This collection was given to the University of Virginia Library by Anne Dutcher, Stuart, Florida, on March 26, 1997.
James Northcote, an English portraitist and historical painter, was born at Plymouth, Devonshire, in 1746, the son of a watchmaker, who came to London and apprenticed himself to Sir Joshua Reynolds in 1773. He traveled to Italy in 1777, and during his residence there he became a member of the Ancient Etruscan Academy of Cortona, the Imperial Academy at Florence, and the Academy Del Forti at Rome. Northcote returned to England in 1781 and was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1786. Northcote died in London on July 13, 1831.
This collection consists of an incomplete autograph manuscript for One Hundred Fables, Original and Selected by James Northcote (1746-1831) first published by George Lawford in 1828; a printed item entitled Diligence and Dissipation: or the Progress of a Modest Girl and a Wanton (1796), which was transferred to the Rare Books Division; engravings of James Northcote and Sir John Northcote; and related papers, ca. 1794-1832, ca. fifty items. The pages of the manuscript have been numbered in pencil and include various letters, lists of possible fables to include in the book, and both pencil and ink manuscripts of individual fables.
Correspondents include: George Lawford to James Northcote concerning the fables (1827 Jul 5, Aug 13); Messrs. Furlong & Co. to Northcote regarding William Wallace Tucker (1825 May 18); D. Dunbar to Cawthorn Roades (1829 Jan); a letter to Northcote about the Anniversary Festival of the Artists Benevolent Fund (1827 May 6); and a letter to R.B. Davis from William Hillman, executor of Northcote (1832 Oct 22).
