Scope and Content Information

In this two page letter, John Jacob Astor, New York, New York, writes to James Barbour, Secretary of War, concerning the condition of the abandoned Fort Gansevoort, and proposing to restore the fort and the frame-house at his own expense in order to place the Fur of the American Company there until the government may need it again.
