Letter from Erskine Caldwell to Matthew Bruccoli, Accession #7971-r, Special Collections Dept., University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, Va.
This letter was given to the Library on August 12, 1987 by Matthew J. Bruccoli of Columbia, South Carolina.
This letter, December 30, 1975, from Malcolm Cowley, Sherman, Connecticut, to Matthew J. Bruccoli, concerns and discusses parallels between Erskine Caldwell and William Faulkner, especially in Caldwell's earlier works, such as his novel The Bastard and his story "Saturday Afternoon." He comments that Caldwell does not have Faulkner's "psychological depth" or "technical inventiveness" but that he does "reveal a totally new world." Cowley is interested in writing a piece on Caldwell and also in meeting with Bruccoli to discuss his magazine.
