These items were given to the University of Virginia Library by Wilton Larsen White and Sarah Vicars White, Miami, Florida, on December 2, 1988.

Scope and Content Information

This collection consists of nine items, 1861-1911, all pertaining to Lt. Joseph T. Allyn, Jr. of Norfolk, Virginia, including an handwritten account (given in the form of an address) in pencil of a near engagement after the famous battle between The Monitor and the Merrimac and his subsequent military service in the Norfolk Light Artillery Blues, which he joined in 1862. This service included participation in the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. The original account consists of thirteen pages; another copy hand-written in ink by his son, Joseph T. Allyn III, is 24 pages long and much easier to read.

Also present are two letters written by Joseph T. Allyn, Jr. to his father, Joseph T. Allyn, 1861 February 14 and April 19,while he was attending the University of Virginia, four letters between Allyn and the Records and Pension Office, 1903, discussing his service in the Confederate forces, a letter of introduction for Allyn from J.J. [Linkins?], to General John B. Floyd, with an explanatory cover letter dated November 16, 1911, and a souvenir Confederate ten dollar bill for "Pickett-Buchanan Camp, R.E. Lee's Birthday, January 19, 1892."
