Letter from Lucy Larcom to Susan Hayes Ward, Accession # 7005-f, Special Collections Dept., University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, Va.
This holding was purchased from David Holmes on July 8, 1996.
In this letter to "Dear Susie" [Susan Hayes Ward] (1838-1924), Lucy Larcom, Beverly, Massachusetts, mentions Guilford [Institute in Connecticut]; the anniversary at [Wheaton Seminary], Norton, [Massachusetts]; and, being in Amesbury, [Massachusetts]. She also mentions knowing Mrs. Metcalf, the Doggetts, poet John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892), author Gail Hamilton [Miss Mary Abigail Dodge] (1833-1896), educator Maria Mitchell (1818-1889), and Miss Spalding during her years at Wheaton Seminary. She writes of her stay in Amesbury that "it is always a refreshment to be in the society of a man like our poet Whittier" and says that she has left Ward's copy of Faber's Poems [Frederick William Faber (1814-1863)] with Whittier as he expressed a desire to read them.
A portion of this letter was published in The Rushlight: Special Number in Memory of Lucy Larcom , issued by the Trustees of Wheaton Seminary, Norton, Massachusetts, and edited by Susan Hayes Ward [RareBooks Barrett PS2223.W3 21894].
