Letter from Gerrit Smith to Frederick Douglass , Accession # 7210, Special Collections Dept., University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, Va.
This holding was purchased from James Lowe of New York, New York on August 23, 1991.
In this letter to Frederick Douglass, Gerrit Smith, Peterboro, New York, a philanthropist and abolitionist who aided John Brown and knew something of Brown's plans against Harpers Ferry, reminds Douglass of his promise to write a letter supporting Smith's efforts to present to the public "the purposes of our old friend J.B. and of his sublime character and to embody in what I say your letter and one or two other letters from those who knew him well."
