John Greenleaf Whittier Letter, Accession # 6972-w, Special Collections Dept., University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, Va.
This item was purchased from John Wilson on 31 May 1995.
In this letter from John Greenleaf Whittier, Danvers, [Massachusetts] to "My dear friend" [Oliver Wendell Holmes], Whittier fears that his cold and painful headache will prevent him from coming tomorrow to meet Matthew Arnold, "I shall be extremely sorry to miss of seeing Matthew Arnold. I have read all his works - always with respect and admiration - and I place very high estimate on his poems. If I do not meet him tomorrow pray give him, in my behalf, a hearty welcome to New England."
