This collection was purchased from Jerry N. Showalter, Ivy, Virginia, on September 20, 1995.
This collection consists of two letters from John Neal to George Bentham. Neal writes to the English botanist introducing Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and listing and forwarding some plants gathered from Mt. Washington.
Introducing Henry W[adsworth] Longfellow, "a particular friend of mine--a poet--an author--and every inch a gentleman . . ." who is one his way to the north of Europe, and requesting his hospitality while Longfellow, his wife, and their traveling companions are in London.
Sending by way of [Henry Wadsworth] Longfellow, a book and some plants--to be shared with [ ] Doane--gathered near the top of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Included is a list of plants gathered from Mt. Washington in July 1831.
