Scope and Content Information

This collection contains the papers of Clifton Waller Barrett and Cornelia Hughes Barrett, including letters, photographs, printed, and a speech. There are four letters from Elizabeth Shepley Sergeant concerning literary matters. On October 31, 1856, she comments on William Dean Howells' The Mother and the Father; Dramatic Passages and her own book, Robert Frost; The Trial by Existence , and inquires about Frost's Derry notebook and other material. On August 3, 1960, she writes about the publication of her book and plans to visit Bread Loaf and Peterboro, mentions receiving letters from Van Wyck Brooks, Leon Edel, Nancy Hale, and Mark Van Doren, and refers to her friend, archaeologist Hetty Goldman. There is a letter, June 7, 1960, from Isabel [Mrs. Thornton] Wilder concerning the party in honor of Frost and Sergeant and giving regrets that Thornton Wilder could not attend. There are also letters from Fredson Bowers, Edward Wagenknecht and John S. Van E. Kohn and a card from Virginia and Erskine Caldwell. There are several snapshots of Barrett family members, Clifton Waller Barrett, Cornelia Hughes Barrett, and Robert Frost, and a photograph of William Royall Tyler. The printed material includes the obituaries of Elizabeth Shepley Sergeant and Clifton Waller Barrett. Also included is the handwritten speech by Barrett delivered to the American Antiquarian Society on October 8, 1970.
