Michael Gratz Land Grant, Accession #6215, Special Collections Dept., University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, Va.
This grant was given to the University of Virginia Library on January 22, 1960, by Mrs. James Lewis Hook, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
This collection consists of a land grant, April 30, 1787, to Michael Gratz (1740-1811), and signed by Virginia Governor Edmund Randolph for his service during the Revolutionary War. The grant was for 28,000 acres in Fayette County, [now] Kentucky, lying along the Big Sandy River. Michael Gratz was a merchant of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in partnership with his brother forming B. & M. Gratz. During the Revolution, Michael Gratz moved to Virginia where he proved very helpful in securing supplies for the colonies.
