Research of Collie Verner Concerning Early Virginia Maps, Accession #5249, Special Collections Dept., University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, Va.
This collection was given to the University of Virginia Library by Coolie Verner, School of Education, Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida, on December 23, 1955.
The papers of Collie Verner consist of notes and correspondence with John Cook Wyllie and various institutions of learning, ca. 1951-1955, and undated, ca. fifty items, all pertaining to his research into the early maps of Virginia. This research culminated in his book A Carto-Bibliographical Study of The English Pilot The Fourth Book with Special Reference to the Charts of Virginia published by the University of Virginia Press in 1960 (see GA369.V45 1960).
According to the author, The Fourth Book of the English Pilot is "of special interest to American carto-bibliographical description because it was the first great atlas of wholly English origin to deal exclusively with American waters; because its production involved some of the most noted map makers and publishers of the time; and because through successive editions its maps illustrated the unfolding geographical knowledge of the American coast within a century of exploration and settlement."
